BAND//NANYANG
TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY SYMPHONIC BAND
Formerly known as the Nanyang Technological Institute Symphonic
Band (1985-1990), the musical group was renamed the Nanyang
Technological Band (NTUSB) after the inauguration of the
university in June 1990. During the band's early years, the
pioneering batches faced many challenges especially in
instrumenting the members and building up a core group of
committed musicians. Through sheer hard work and love for music,
the band has built itself to be reputed as one of the finest
bands in Singapore.
In 2001, the NTUSB won the FIRST prize (1st division, Harmony
Band category) in 14th WMC in Kerkrade, the Netherlands, with
the choice piece-- Fantasy Variation on a theme by Niccolo
Paganini.
In July 2005, the band once again
participated in the (15th) WMC in Kerkrade, the Netherlands. The
band achieved Second Prize in the 1st Harmony Division and
gained valuable exposure through the process. Regardless of the
outcome of each competition, the band’s ultimate aim was to
learn from the rewarding experience and to continually work on
improving our musical standard.
In 2005, Mr Takehiro Oura joined us in our
musical journey as our new resident conductor and has brought a
fresh change to the band. We successfully held our first concert
with Mr Oura in 2006 with raving reviews of our new musical
standards.
The NTUSB will continue to strive towards her
vision of establishing her standing as a music ambassador for
both NTU and Singapore. This, the band will do, by helping to
contribute to NTU's development into a world class university
and by being part of the arts and cultural centre the government
has envisioned Singapore to become.
