Category Winner Grade 3 | 2nd WBAS Wind Band Compositions Contest 2019
About the Work
Garuda is a legendary bird-like creature in Hindu and Buddhist Mythology. In Indonesia, Garuda is also the national emblem, called Garuda Pancasila, intertwined with the concept of Phoenix, and taking the form of Elang Java (Javenese Hawk-Eagle).
In this piece, the composer tries to capture the Grandeur and the Greatness of Garuda, using Javanese Pentatonic Scale to evoke a Supernatural, and Larger-than-life quality of Garuda.
Composed of 3 Parts, the Piece started Slow, with suspense and mystery, symbolizing the Birth of Garuda. As it slowly rises to the next section with majestic and soaring theme, the piece starts to incorporate textures of Gamelan Music, with interlocking, repetition and layering of rhythm. The piece ends with Majestic and Grandeur, as the Garuda mightily flies higher.
This work is one of the required pieces for Division 2A competition and is only available for sale to participating bands for the 7th Singapore International Band Festival 2020.
